2024 is shaping up to be a year of revisiting old favourites in film. I understand this isn’t unusual and we often rag on Hollywood for their lack of original ideas. For some reason, this year it’s more noticeable than ever.
Is it due to the 2022 writer’s strike? Not sure. But let’s take a look at some of the releases scheduled for this year so far:
Road House
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
Dune 2
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
The First Omen
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
Fall Guy
Garfield
Bad Boys 4
Inside Out 2
A Quiet Place: Day One
Twisters
Deadpool 3
Untitled Alien Movie
Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 2
Transformers One
Saw XI
Joker: Folie a Deux
Smile 2
Venom 3
Gladiator 2
Wicked (Wizard of Oz)
Untitled Karate Kid Movie
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Mufasa: The Lion King
The Lord of the Rings “The War of the Rohirrim”
Nosferatu
The Bride! (of Frankenstein)
Baywatch
…While this list doesn’t include ALL of the remakes, reboots and sequels in development (I’m sure I’m missing some). I believe this demonstrates my point.
It’s also worth noting that other sequels have been announced this year and will likely get release dates down the road such as Happy Gilmore 2 and Matrix 5.
