Two astronauts may be stranded on the International Space Station until 2025 due to issues with Boeing’s Starliner capsule. NASA is considering using a SpaceX craft instead, as the Starliner has faced numerous problems since its launch over two months ago.
The astronauts, Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, might have to watch their Starliner return to Earth empty while waiting for seats on a SpaceX flight next February. Initially, they were expected to be in space for just a week or two.
NASA is currently analyzing the Starliner’s thruster issues and evaluating SpaceX as a backup. This uncertainty has delayed both an in-depth review of the Starliner and a planned SpaceX launch.
Boeing, facing significant financial losses on the Starliner program, insists the capsule is safe despite its troubles. However, a switch to SpaceX would be a major setback for Boeing.
With Robert “Kelly” Ortberg stepping in as Boeing’s new CEO, he will have to address these ongoing challenges. This space saga is still unfolding, so stay tuned for more updates!
