When Richard Donner Tricked Gene Hackman

As so many are remembering Gene Hackman after he was found dead at home alongside his wife Betsy Arakawa as well as their dog, one story races to mind.

When Gene Hackman showed up for screen tests for Superman in the late 70’s he was sporting a magnificent moustache specifically grown for the role of Lex Luthor. Director Richard Donner, sporting his own soup strainer, informed Hackman that his moustache would have to go before he appeared on camera. The news was not welcome, but Donner Said that he would shave his own moustache off if Gene agreed in the moment. So a hair/make up artist trimmed off the whiskers, prompting Hackman to immediately tell Donner it was his turn. Richard then revealed the truth of the matter and peeled off what turned out to be a fake moustache. According to his account, Donner was afraid he was going to get decked by the large fuming actor before him. But Hackman let out a laugh, and went forward with the picture leaving any chips on his shoulder on the floor with those moustache clippings.
