If you’ve ever found yourself stuck at the Eighth Street East railway crossing in Saskatoon, you know the frustration of watching a long train crawl by. Well, relief is finally on the horizon! The city’s transportation committee recently moved forward with a $54-million plan to build a brand-new overpass at that exact spot.
This isn’t just about current delays; it’s a proactive move for the future. With the nearby Holmwood sector growing, traffic is expected to skyrocket from 8,000 to nearly 48,000 vehicles daily. Choosing an overpass over an underpass saves millions while adding six lanes and dedicated paths for cyclists and pedestrians. While the north access to Wess Road will eventually close for safety, the trade-off is a much smoother commute. If City Council gives the final thumbs-up, we should be cruising over the tracks by 2030!
