If you have a Toys “R” Us Canada gift card tucked away for a rainy day, I have some “uh-oh” news: as of yesterday, the party is officially over.
Following a filing for creditor protection earlier this month, a judge gave the iconic toy retailer a 14-day window to honor existing gift cards. That window slammed shut yesterday, February 16. With the company facing $120 million in debt, including $36 million in unredeemed gift card balances, they’ve officially pulled the plug on those plastic balances.
It’s a tough break for “Toys ‘R’ Us kids” across the country, especially since their online store has also gone dark. For now, the remaining 22 physical stores are still open, but those gift cards are effectively just nostalgic bookmarks. Add those gift cards to pile of plastic toys your kids no longer play with.
