This past Christmas, Canadians went all out with the gift-giving joy, piling beautifully wrapped presents under trees across the country. The big reveal? We tossed a whopping 540,000 tonnes of wrapping paper and gift bags into the trash—that’s the weight of about 100,000 elephants stomping through landfills!
All that shiny excitement added to the holiday magic, but glittery or foil wraps aren’t recyclable and headed straight to the dump. On the brighter side, plenty of folks got creative with reusable fabric, recycled paper, newspaper comics, or quirky gift bags.
Whatever wrapped up your holidays, here’s hoping the real gift was the laughs and memories. Cheers to a joyful (and slightly less wasteful) new year!
