Saskatchewan drivers, your speeding tickets just helped fund safer roads. Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) announced it’s distributing $2 million in photo radar revenue to 78 communities across the province. This is the latest six-month payout after covering program costs.
The money—generated from speed and red-light cameras on streets and highways—goes straight to traffic safety improvements: new speed display signs, better crosswalks, improved lighting, and other upgrades that prevent accidents. Communities hosting the cameras get a direct share for local projects, with the rest supporting the Provincial Traffic Safety Fund.
SGI stresses the goal isn’t revenue—it’s safer driving. Fines discourage speeding, communities get resources to fix problem spots, and everyone benefits from fewer crashes. If your town is on the list, expect some visible safety upgrades soon.
Next time you see a flash, remember: your fine might just pay for that new pedestrian crossing.
